Credit card fears should not put off online shoppers

After the variety of horror stories that people tend to see in the news these days regarding credit card fraud and identity theft it is little wonder that so many people are nervous about shopping online for fear of becoming one of the victims of this type of crime. This is particularly true when it comes to older shoppers who are more nervous about this type of crime as they are not as trusting of advanced technology as the younger generation.

However, officials have said that people should not lose out on the money and time saving benefits of shopping online for fear of this type of crime, as they can avoid becoming victims if they are vigilant and careful with their details when making online purchases and payments. In fact, recent figures from the UK Cards Association have suggested that credit and debit card fraud has fallen to its lowest level in a decade, falling by around 17 percent over the past year.

The banking industry believes that the reason behind the steep drop in card fraud is the variety of measures that the industry has devised and implemented to protect cardholders. This includes measures such as Verified by Visa and MasterCard Secure, both of which are designed as an additional safeguard to protect those that are making online purchases and payments.

Of course, shoppers should exercise caution when using their credit and debit cards online and should ensure that they are doing things such as checking that the website that they use is secure and reputable, that they do not save their passwords and account details to a computer that is shared, and that they do not link to sites to make purchases via email, as these could be phishing scams.
